A ride to ensure that kids have safe roads and great trails
About the Ride

There are two ride options: you can join a formal fully-supported mountain bike ride with Dave Wiens in famous Camp Tamarancho in Fairfax, California (which many people site as the birthplace of the modern mountain bike movement), or you can organize your own mountain or road bike ride in the dirt and asphalt of Marin County.

Formal Ride

Head out at 10:30 a.m. for a vigorous and social 3-4 hour mountain bike ride with National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) board member and professional mountain biker, 6-time winner of the Leadville 100, Dave Wiens! This ride will head out to White Hill, up the Porcupine Trail and into Camp Tamarancho, where you’ll hit 8 miles of the best narrow singletrack in Marin County! After one lap you can head back to the golf course, or continue on up to Pine Mountain Ridge and head over to and down the famous Repack fire road.

Suggested informal rides

So, you want to help out, but you’re not sure you want to do the Dave Wiens ride. Maybe you prefer road riding, or the mountain bike ride with Dave Wiens sounds a little beyond your capability. The Dirt Bowl experts will do their best to match you up with other riders choosing these options. Here are a few suggested alternatives:

Point Reyes Light House

Marshall Wall

Lucas Valley

Pine Mountain Loop

Deer Park

Dirt Bowl Route with Dave Wiens

20 miles

3,500 feet of climbing

For intermediate and advanced riders

This route will leave the Golf Course and head up Manzanita Fire Road, then go along San Geronimo Ridge Fire Road, down White Hill Fire Road, into Camp Tamarancho for a 6-mile single-track loop and then back the way we came.

The route is 20 miles and takes between 2.5 and 4.5 hours, depending on your pace. It starts off with a pretty steep 1,000 ft. climb. Then it meanders along San Geronimo Ridge (also know as 17 knolls) with a little more climbing and some amazing views of Mt. Tam and Kent Lake. At Horseshoe Junction (think House of Pancakes on Turkey Day Ride) the route heads down White Hill Fire Road and around the backside of White Hill to the B-17 extension.

The B-17 Extension takes us into Camp Tamarancho, where the route takes a left turn for a clockwise loop. We’ll ride the following segments in this order; Broken Dam, Goldman, Serpentine, Wagon Wheel and B-17. When the route returns to the B-17 extension, we’ll say goodbye to Tamarancho and retrace our route back home for the BBQ and game!
